Name: Rebecca Glitch
Role in SWE: University of Rochester Section
Education: BS Civil Engineering, Syracuse University
Company: BME Associates
Job Title: Design Engineer
Job Description: I work as part of a project team to provide practical and cost effective design solutions to a variety of development projects. My responsibilities include completing site plans, utility service design, stormwater management design, drainage, grading, earthwork, construction details, and agency approvals/permitting.
# Years in this position: 3 years
Why my job is so SWEet: I’ve gotten to work on a variety of different development projects, and the most rewarding aspect is getting to see our designs come to life! Site engineering has given me the opportunity to put my problem solving skills to the test, as every project site promotes different design challenges to overcome. As one of only two female engineers in our department, I feel we are always treated with respect and our work is greatly appreciated. Along with the design aspect, the people at BME make coming to work each day enjoyable, we work hard, have fun, and support each other when the going gets tough.
Words of Wisdom for someone starting in my field: Keep asking questions, don’t be afraid, and soak in everything you’re told. You literally keep learning something new every day!
Do you have any hobbies? I am an avid Syracuse Basketball and Denver Broncos fan. I enjoy playing basketball, golf, trying new recipes and traveling. BME’s office is also located in the Village of Fairport; adjacent to the canal…there is always something fun to do!
Something that others probably don’t know about you: I’ve slept over in the Carrier Dome a few nights while camping out for the SU/Villanova game my freshman year. I competitively rode horses for 10 years as well as won a NY State Championship in basketball. One of my dream vacations would be to go to New Zealand and visit some of the sets where the Lord of the Rings was filmed.
